AIS installation question
« on: 04 March, 2014, 01:43:42 am »
I'm going to be setting up several receiving stations for research purposes and I'd like to get feedback as to what the best installation set up (receiver and antenna) would be for locations where I can set them up and not have to worry about going back to mess around with them.

Right now I've got stations set up with AIS receivers (emtrak) connected via USB to raspberry pis which port the nmea strings to aishub. I haven't had any problems related to these setups so far, but I'm not an expert with this stuff and I'm not sure if I'm missing out on some fidelity/AIS range with this method. Again though I've had no issues so far, with the number of installations I'm planning on deploying I won't really be able to personally visit the stations should something go wrong.

I've been told the new COMAR 300N systems are great for 'plug-in and forget' but for their price I can develop about 3 of what I'm currently using.

Then there is the antenna issue. I keep buying ~8ft marine AIS antennas which, again, seem to be working well. Most of these deployments will have messages coming from a particular direction so maybe another form of antenna is in order?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. And thanks to everyone who participates on this site; the information provided here is invaluable to ocean studies and research.

Raspberry Pi is very good and low cost solution. It does not affect your sensitivity. The only disadvantage of this approach is that you will need good Linux skills.

Directional (Yagi) antennas for 160MHz are quite big and expensive. 8ft omnidirectional antenna is very good and balanced solution (price/reception ratio)
