AIS Hub general questions
« on: 03 February, 2014, 08:02:30 pm »
Hi,

Since I'm rather new to the subject, I have some questions regarding AIS data that can be received using AIS Hub:

1. Data contribution - as I understand, all I need is AIS box with USB connection and AIS Dispatcher software. There are no furhter requirements? We are located on the seashore so we are going to provide some data.
2. Real coverage of AIS Hub compared to commercial services like Marinetraffic or liveAIS - do you have any statistics of available vessels on AIS Hub and on marinetraffic for example. There is a tab - Live Ships Map - does it contain all vessels available?
3. Satellite AIS - is it somehow covered by AIS Hub service?

I'm considering to run a project based on AIS Hub and need answers ASAP. Your comments appreciated.

1) Yes, you need an AIS box connected to your PC. You can also use Ethernet enabled AIS receiver like Comar SLR200N or Comar SLR300N
2) Check http://www.aishub.net/aiscoverage.html . AISHub forwards data shared by contributors. It is not commercial service and the coverage does not include any purchased data.
3) Satellite data is very expensive. Don't expect to receive via free service like AISHub :)

Peter,

1,3 clear.

What can I do so further analyse the coverage. Can I somehow check how many tugs are in range in current moment, or other ship type, or area? If data is let's say 90% compared to commercial services, I can use it for my project, but how can I make evaluation?

To be more specific - could I somehow get trial access to AISHub - even 1-3 days would be enough... How can I approach that matter?
