Developing AIS tracking software, comparing providers
« on: 24 November, 2015, 10:00:23 am »
I'm currently working on a pre-study for a software that will be used to track ships in a certain area with needs for quite high precision. I've been pulling data from VTExplorer and AISHub for about a week now and looking through it I've been starting to see some anomalies. Pruning my data from 2015-11-20 00:00:00 and comparing when both providers first got AIS from a ship in my zone, there sometimes is up to a 11 (!) hour difference between AISHub and VTExplorer, where AISHub is the slower provider. Looking at the coverage map, AISHub seems to have proper coverage in the area, so I'm struggling to explain such a big difference. Any ideas what might be the issue? Offline receivers, "blank" spots within the coverage map or other issues?

The area I've been looking at is defined by the following coordinates:
Min lon: 7.607729
Max lon: 8.835411
Min lat:  54.134438
Max lat: 54.9

Two of the ships in question that stood out:

https://www.vesselfinder.com/vessels/PELLWORM-1-IMO-9152791-MMSI-211255580

Any help with this will be much appreciated, thanks.
